Love your clients. You want to let them know. Maybe you even accidentally said “I kiss you goodbye” at some point.
It is common for companies to send greeting emails for customers during the December holiday seasonbut a Valentine card could be a nice little surprise.

The dos and don’ts of congratulating customers on Valentine’s Day
Before we get to the Valentine’s Day message examples and templates, a little cleanup:
- Keep it short and sweet. As with any other communication with clients, the less clutter you have, the clearer and more memorable the message will be.
It can’t be any shorter or sweeter than that. (Source)
- Personalize it: You should always have some degree of personalization in your communications with clients, but especially for Valentine’s Day emails and notes, you should take it up a notch to get the right impression.
- Don’t make it a sales pitch. You can (and should) offer something small in your message, but not at an angle to get them to buy. Stay away from the usual offers and offer something that requires a little more thought. It’s about surprising them with a gift, not about increase in holiday sales.
- Send on Valentine’s Day: Again, this is not exactly intended as a Marketing campaign for Valentine’s Day. Send out your gift guides and early bird specials at the beginning of the month. Send your card on the right day.

- Include something special: As I mentioned, this should be thoughtful and more personalized – so, not typical sales promotion. Maybe a discount on a regular item they order, a gift card, a free gift, or even a handwritten note. Offer a coupon for a free drink or ice cream cone at a local restaurant. It can also mean a free resource overview or guide, or a scrapbook or timeline visualization of your relationship with them. If you’re on a budget, offer only what you can afford loyal customers.
- Be inclusive: Stay away from talking about celebrating with a loved one (there are many singles, widows and lonely individuals out there) and address your relationship with them. Get more diversity and inclusion vacation tips here.
- Use conversational tone: Stay away from formal conversations. The less awkward you try to make yourself by avoiding the L word or keeping it professional, the more awkward you’ll be. The goal is not to be authoritative, but to connect.
Dear Jane:
On behalf of [company] we want to express our gratitude to you, our valued customer this Valentine’s Day. We appreciate the trust you have placed in our business and send you warm wishes on this sentimental day.
Now, that’s really awkward. Let’s take another look at a reworked, more casual version of this Valentine’s Day message:
Hey Jane,
What better day than today to tell you how much we appreciate you? The fact that you trust us with your financial health makes us feel pretty darn special. So today we love back. Here’s a coupon for free ice cream at Cone Co. Happy Valentine’s Day!
See the difference? It doesn’t have to be cheesy. Just a real one.

Put it in a social media post
A social media post is a little less personalized than an email, but you can still be thoughtful with it, making it a good option if you’re pressed for time. You can be creative with it (how to use Canva here!).
Thank you for being such great customers. We warmly welcome you!
We wouldn’t be where we are without you. Happy Valentine’s Day!
No offer or freebie is expected in this kind of announcement, especially since it will reach such a wide audience. Additionally, don’t ask recipients to open the email and read it. They can only stumble in their regular activities. Here you can take more advantage of the community approach, making your customers and followers to feel part of a larger family.

Send a direct message
Or go the DM route, which provides email personalization and social media convenience. Just about everyone social media platform has direct messaging functionality, a note like this might work:
Hey Mark!
I know we communicate a lot via comments, likes and shares, but I thought I’d reach out via DM today to tell you how much your enthusiasm means to me. We greatly appreciate your engagement with my content, attending events and patronizing my company. I just emailed you a gift card to Milk Street Cafe. Treat yourself to a delicious lunch today!
Best,
Mia
Write a personal e-mail
Of course, the above method works well in an individual email as well. Remember, this is NOT a generic email where you just exchange names. Each message should be unique to the customer.
Hi Theresa!
I promise I’m not for Valentine’s Day, so I’ll do my best to avoid any cheesiness. I just wanted to let you know that every course you take has a little extra pep in your step – you just have a certain spark that inspires others around you. It does not go unnoticed! And I really appreciate that. I’ve added three free courses to your card that you can use at any time or use to bring a friend. Happy Valentine’s Day!
