Google released its annual report “The Year in Search”, highlighting the most popular trending searchesnews, people, entertainment and more that caught the world’s attention in 2024.
Based on Google search data, the report offers insight into the themes, events and figures that defined the year.
Here’s an overview of the most popular searches worldwide and an overview of US-specific trends.
Globally, major sporting events dominate trending searches.
The Copa América soccer tournament topped the list, followed by the UEFA European Championship and the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup.
In the news category, the US presidential election was the most searched topic in the world, surpassing interest in Olympic game, which was the third.
The extreme heat and Hurricane Milton also drove significant search interest, ranking as the second and fourth biggest global news stories.
In the field of entertainment, veteran comedian and actor Katt Williams topped the global list of most searched actors. Rising stars like Ella Purnell and Hina Khan also earned places in the top five.
Long-awaited sequels dominated movie searches, with “Inside Out 2,” “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Dune: Part Two” taking the top three spots.

Boxer Mike Tyson, the second most sought-after athlete in the world after Algerian karate champion Imana Khelif, won sports fans around the world.
Sixteen-year-old soccer phenom Lamine Yamal also made the top five, reflecting the growing buzz about the young star.
American franchises dominated sports teams, with the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Celtics in the top five for global searches.
However, the interest in football was evident, and Inter Miami CF and Germany’s Bayer Leverkusen were also on the list.

In games, multiplayer life simulation Connections was the most searched game globally, followed by open-world creature-trapping adventure Palworld.
Trends indicate players’ desire for connection and imaginative escape from reality.

Recipes for Olympic-themed chocolate muffins topped global food-related searches, while the traditional Chinese treat tanghulu came in second. Chocolate bar Dubai rounded out the top five, showcasing an international palate.
When it came out, Google Maps searches showed Central Park in New York as the most searched park in the world, while the British Museum topped the museum list.
When it comes to sports field searches, Madison Square Garden leads the pack.

Google’s “Hum to Search” feature, which identifies songs based on audio clips, found that people around the world were eager to find interesting songs like Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” and Lady Gaga’s “Die With A Smile.”
The “Wellerman” sea shack has also experienced a global renaissance.
