The US judge ruled that Anthropic use of legal purchased books to train their artificial intelligence models (AI) is a fair use.

According to a June 23Judge William Alsup of North District of California stated it Converting a printed book into a digital -training file is allowed toprovided that the company has copyright to the book.

He explained that this procedure was different enough from the original purpose of the book to be considered honest use. However, he made it clear The government only applies to books that have been anthropically bought.

The case was brought by authors Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber and Kirk Wallace Johnson. They accused Anthropic of using a large number of pirate books to train their Claude AI models.

ALSUP described how an anthropin team would buy printed books, remove binding, scanning pages, and then use the text to build its AI system. Said this use is fair because it is helped creating something new and did not replace the original works.

However, the judge Criticized anthropically for taking over millions of titles from the pirate website. He stated that it was hard to see how it could be justified.

He noted that obtaining books from illegal sources, instead of buying them, undermines any request on fair use. There will be a separate trial that will decide how much anthropic can pay for it.
