Bluesky Adds Trending Topics, Exceeds 25 Million Users

While you’re busy working out your Threads strategy, Bluesky is also constantly growing and adding new features to keep up with audience demands.

Just before Christmas, Bluesky has launched its own version of Trending Topicswhich will make it easier for users to access the latest discussions of interest in the application.

As you can see in this example, Bluesky’s trending topics will be based on systematic discovery of key terms, highlighting the topics that generate the most mentions at any given time.

Here’s another look at the trending list and display when you tap on a topic (via Radu Oncesc):

Bluesky Trending themes

Bluesky says this is the first version of its approach to trending topics, and it will be iterative based on user feedback.

According to Bluesky:

You can disable it with the X button or in settings, while your muted words are trending.”

The screen is currently available in English, and Bluesky expects a wider release in the near future.

It’s the latest development for the Twitter-clone app, bringing it more in line with what Twitter used to be. And many users see Bluesky as an alternative that is more like Twitter than other apps, especially because Thread restrictions for political contentwhich has seemingly limited its capacity to highlight the most relevant news trends.

Bluesky is too more friendly towards external connectionsand this has helped to better align the platform with publishers and journalists, two key groups of creators who are actively seeking to publish content.

And with very few people actually posting anything on social apps and most simply reading them, this is key to growth. Which is why Meta was so freaked out by Bluesky’s meteoric rise late last year, even though that growth spurt has slowed somewhat, based on the latest stats.

According to Bluesky boss Jay Graber, Bluesky now has 25.9 million users.

The platform rose from A total of 13 million users in Octoberto 20 million by mid-Novemberso his growth has slowed a bit in the past 6 weeks.

But it’s still growing, while Graber also notes that:

“In the last month and a half of the organization [have reported] 2-10x increase in quantity engagement receive.

So there may be an opportunity for brands, but in comparison, 25.9 million users is only 8.63% of Threads current active user base.

But it might also be worth establishing a Bluesky presence now, just in case it continues to get more attention, though I’d be hesitant to put everything on Bluesky just yet.

Perhaps, if it reaches 100 million users, it will be a more legitimate consideration. Although it will actually get to that level, without ad funding (which Bluesky tries to dodge), also remains to be seen.
