Amid the ongoing saga of TikTok’s availability in the US, Instagram has been working to position itself as the new home for TikTok users, adding longer reelsand more A network of TikTok-like profilesamong other tweaks.
And now it also wants to offer a replacement for CapCut, a popular mobile video editing app, which is also owned by TikTok owner ByteDance, and is therefore also caught in the TikTok ban (or not) to push.
This is “Edits”, Instagram a new mobile video editing toolwhich features a “full suite of creative tools,” according to the IG boss Adam Mosseri.
The edits will offer a range of creative tools and inspirational resources, including:
Editing will also allow you to share designs with friends and other creators from within the app, and you’ll also be able to export your clips without a watermark for use on other platforms.
So it’s CapCut, but Instagram’s version, providing a more comprehensive set of mobile tools to edit your Instagram Reels and clips.
Additionally (unsurprisingly), Meta is also exploring augmented AI-powered app tools, including the ability to animate photos and insert custom visual effects.
And while it’s very clearly an attempt to collect CapCut users and provide a landing place for the TikTok audience, it will be a handy app to add to your social media management toolbox, providing a more direct way to edit and post your Instagram Role, with an expanded toolkit.
As such, whatever you think of Meta’s replication efforts, the ultimate winner is us users, providing more options to enable improved editing and customization, and an alternative in case CapCut ends up falling victim to the TikTok saga.
Which now looks like it is it doesn’t happenand Trump offers assurances that he will save the app. But then again, Trump’s asking price for TikTok to stay in the US could be high, so TikTok itself isn’t out of the woods yet.
Which makes this a valuable and useful addition, and another must-have tool to keep in mind for your content process.
You can sign up to pre-order the app, which should be released in March, here.
