Mastodon Moves to Non-Profit Structure

While Threads has emerged as a key alternative to Twitter, and Bluesky is gaining popularity as an alternative to it, Mastodon, which saw a surge in interest following Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter, has lagged behind, a sort of afterthought of broader decentralized social pressure. .

But it still exists, and still serves about a million active users, while its membership is growing, now up to 10 million members.

As you can see, the platform has seen another surge in membership recently and could become popular again if there is some level of opposition Meta’s latest moderation changesas many expect.

But that matters less at this stage, even though it remains the best representation of a decentralized social movement and remains true to its mission of enabling greater control and ownership of data for users.

And today, Mastodon has taken steps to ensure that independence and security is maintained by transferring ownership of the app to a non-profit group.

According to Mastodon:

When founder Eugen Rochko started working on Mastodon, his focus was on creating the code and conditions for the kind of social media he envisioned. The legal arrangement was a means to an end, a quick fix that allowed him to continue his business. He stated from the beginning that Mastodon would not be for sale and that it would be free from the control of a wealthy individual, and he could ensure this because he is the person in control, the sole final decision maker.

In keeping with this ethos, ownership of the platform will be transferred to a new non-profit organization, to ensure that the app cannot be owned or controlled by a single person.

“The next 6 months will see the transformation of Mastodon’s structures, moving away from the sole proprietorship in the early days and embedding the imagined independence into a dedicated European not-for-profit entity.

The change will also see Mastodon CEO Eugen Rochko move into another role focused on product strategyMr.

The move shows that Mastodon is committed to its decentralized roots, which dictate that the app must remain outside of any form of centralized control, to avoid the pitfalls of other, larger social apps.

It’s what the decentralized social movement is based on, and it’s also why decentralization advocates were worried about Threads, which is owned by Meta. fediverse link integrationbecause the whole decentralized/fediverse movement is designed to counter the actions of Meta and their ilk.

But Threads only partially committed to decentralized protocols, in favor of ease of use, while Bluesky also integrated decentralized connection elements, but also relied on more modern, traditional connection methods to increase downloads.

A key obstacle to decentralized social pressure, to enable this, users need to be given more control over the servers they connect to and the algorithms that define their experience. Which puts more control in the hands of each user, but also means more options, more research, and more time between signing up for an app and determining your preferences.

And most people just don’t care enough to catch on.

Many users have been confused by Mastodon’s more complex login process, which offers specific customizations but can be confusing for the average user.

And most just want to download an app and start scrolling, which will always be an obstacle to decentralized social download.

But Mastodon remains committed to its principles, and this is another step in that direction, ensuring independence and transparency, and control, for all users.

It’s an admirable move, but it’s hard to see Mastodon becoming a bigger player without a significant increase in broader digital literacy.
