TikTok has launched the next phase of its in-app purchases in the UK, with a new offering called “GMV max“, which uses artificial intelligence to optimize your product listings in the app.

Available for products and LIVE purchase sessions on the TikTok Shop, Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) Max automates campaign creation, including audience targeting, bidding and creative selection, to optimize campaign performance by seamlessly identifying and scaling high-performing assets for sellers on the platform. “

Essentially, GMV Max will manage the process of advertising your product, finding funding, creating ad campaigns, and optimizing for sales “with incremental GMV that would otherwise be unattainable, so that the ratio of GMV to ad spend remains stable.”

It’s an end-to-end ad creation system, which aims to make it easier than ever for brands to list their products on the app and increase sales to TikTok users.

And the opportunities for such are increasing.

According to TikTok, TikTok Shop now has over 200,000 active small businesses in the UK and is used for over 6,000 LIVE purchases every day.

In-stream buying is TikTok’s big monetization focus, after seeing great success with the same in the Chinese market. And while Western audiences haven’t yet been as open to such things, there are some positive signs emerging, which could make the GMV Max a worthwhile lure for British brands.

Indeed, TikTok’s now the second largest online seller of beauty and wellness in Great Britain, and combined with its popularity and broader online consumption trends, it may be worthwhile for more companies to explore the potential of TikTok promotions for their products.

And if TikTok can get more people to buy into the stream, it will be a big boost to its broader business efforts. By comparison, in-app sales in the local version of the app (Douyin) are now the highest in China 500 billion dollars a year. TikTok generated $3.8 billion in sales in 2023.

So the opportunity is huge, and TikTok just needs to cross that key adoption threshold to fuel that momentum.

The GMV Max could be another step in that direction.
