Vitalik Buterin's New Proposal Seeks 16.7M Gas Cap on Ethereum to Rein In Transaction Bloat

The aim is to store a hard ceiling on the maximum gas that transactions can consume in motion that developers would say that they could strengthen the network stability and make a string more viable for certain applications.

The proposal, the EIP-7983, proposes to reduce individual transactions to 16,777,216 gas (2²⁴)-a change from current design, which technically allows a single transaction to consume the entire gas limit.

Since Monday, the only Ethereum transaction can consume as much gas as it allows the whole block – a design option that represents several power and security problems.

When one transaction consumes almost all available gas, it disrupts the distribution of workloads in the network and tends to reduce the efficient performance of the block.

Developers working on virtual machines with zero knowledge (ZVVM) considered it difficult to process large transactions in parallel and instead have often extended to divide work on multiple transactions.

And for parallel engines, wildly changing gas sizes introduce imbalances across processing fibers

Proponents say that the caps would simplify the pain points.

“16 777 216 is nice because it is easier to divide things and potentially simplify downstream engineering,” wrote one contributor in the github thread. Others argued that it is in accordance with the long -term shift of Ethereum to modularity and demonstrability.

A new ceiling would require the division of some large transactions, such as the deployment of the contract, into smaller pieces. The authors of the proposal reported that most of the real world activities are already declining significantly below the border and the cases of the edges are minimal.

The EIP-7983 builds on previous initiatives linked to sources such as the EIP-7825, and signals a growing consensus that the basic layer of Ethereum should promote stricter guarantees as changing.

The proposal remains in the status proposal and is now open for a wider community control.
