Meta’s Planning to Launch New Smart Glasses, Ahead of AR Expansion


Meta’s AR glasses are poised to take another step forward this year, with the latest reports of the company’s moves providing a little more insight into its wearables planning.

According to a a new report from BloombergMeta plans to release a new version of its current smart glasses later this year, specifically aimed at athletes, with the device’s data tracking elements to help improve performance feedback.

Meta’s athletic sunglasses will reportedly be based on Oakley’s “Sphere” style.and will come with a single camera, in the center of the frame, to reduce weight.

Oakley is owned by EssilorLuxottica, the same company that owns Ray Ban, with whom Meta already collaborated on its first smart glasses. Meta also allegedly invested in the company last yearcementing that partnership, which will give Meta direct access to the company’s most popular frames and styles when developing its eyewear models.

Which will also, eventually, extend to fully functional AR glasses, although that’s still some way off.

According to a Bloomberg report, Meta’s next phase on this front will be the release of its first smart glasses with a heads-up display, which should be available later this year.

The next iteration of his Ray Ban Stories glasses (now called “Ray Ban Meta” according to Meta’s product page) will be able to deliver notifications and display photos through this small screen that will be visible to the user in the lower part of the display. It will also be able to run “simple” apps, although they won’t be fully AR-enabled, providing digital overlays on real-world scenes.

It’s the next stage, and the goal is still there planning for 2027to give it more time to establish more sustainable, cheaper manufacturing processes, which will lower the cost of the AR device.

The CEO of Meta was Mark Zuckerberg very critical of Apple’s approach with his AR-enabled VisionPro device, noting that his Price 3499 dollars is simply too high to ensure widespread adoption. Instead, Meta is committed to lowering the cost of its own wearables to expand its market reach, and is also committed to launching an AR device that follows this same principle.

Although its newer smart glasses will be more expensive.

The model coming later this year is expected to cost twice as much as the current Ray Ban Metas, while the company is also predicted that his AR glasses will end up costing the same amount as “the ultimate laptop or smartphone.”

But Zuckerberg also expects that smart glasses will surpass smartphones in popularity and convenience in the next decadeso that cost may be easier to swallow if you no longer rely on your phone. Although it will also require a significant change in habits and society to facilitate such growth.

What Meta is working hard on now, while trying to keep costs down could also be one of the key reasons why Zuckerberg eager to work with the incoming Trump administrationto avoid increasing costs for his projects.

Many components of Meta glasses are originally from Chinaand with Trump’s promise of tariffs on non-US goods, especially Chinese imports, this could spoil Meta’s plans.

Based on these latest insights, Meta plans to launch AR during Trump’s presidency, meaning it will be heavily dependent on the government to ease its way through regulatory processes to make the most of this opportunity.

That alone might be enough to justify Zuckerberg bowing to Trump, changing the company’s existing content policies to please the president, among other compromises.

And if Zuck is right, it could pay off big in the long run.

It won’t be popular, and it’s unclear whether the downsides of this approach will outweigh the broader benefits. But for Meta itself, the way forward is clear and it will need a lot of government cooperation to help its AI, AR and VR expansion.
