When California and 19 other countries approved their own personal data protection laws, it was prevailing to focus consumer protection against excessive traders who increase and abuse their data.
But now people are also worried about how data can be abused by foreign hackers or national actors, adding another layer of urgency – and complexity – discussing the potential Federal Personal Data Protection Act.

Can progress be made?
Wyden, a democratic senator, said that the privacy of data can be a rare problem where the coalition is formed through the aisle. He said he was “proud” that he voted for the Republican leader Marco Rubio, who was confirmed by the Senate as a state secretary.
“He is one of the few guys in the Senate of the United States who recognizes that something is really beyond breaking when all these foreign threats have all these foreign companies have your personal data,” Wyden said.
