Retail as old as time

A month ago, AdExchanger assumed headlined: “Will retail media destroy retail?”

Betteridge’s Law says the answer is “No.” But the strikes are increasing.

The most recent example comes from Walgreens (and we’re not even talking about shelf barricades). Three years ago, Walgreens signed a ten-year contract with Cooler Screens to install digital signs as refrigerator doors. The screens ostensibly show what’s inside, but the point is to generate incremental ad impressions because video ads play spontaneously when someone is nearby. Consumers (and Walgreens) rebelled against the idea.

Walgreens and Cooler Screens ended up in an ugly ongoing legal situation because Walgreens wanted to drop the label but had a 10-year commitment. The judge forced them to reuse the screens where they were installed.

One strong arm tactic that Cooler Screens used this December was Bloomberg news, she was building her own tech. Hundreds of screens and feeds from Walgreens stores blacked out, effectively obscuring the products inside during the busiest part of the holiday season.

As always, ad revenue seems to be the elusive, low-hanging fruit. Until someone actually tries the fruit.

You are not immune to propaganda

First X, then Meta — and now TikTok is throwing its full support behind the Trump administration, CNN news.

Even as the internet bid farewell to TikTok all of last week, there was an unspoken assumption that President Trump would lift the government-ordered ban once he took office, despite he instigated it himself five years ago.

But even so, many onlookers didn’t expect it to be the platform itself praise him for that.

After just a few hours offline, the TikTok app and website started showing users this message: “Thank you for your patience and support. Thanks to President Trump’s efforts, TikTok is back in the US!” (Note that he hadn’t actually been sworn in when the news first broke.)

“TikTok’s decision to name Trump in the announcement is a choice,” Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez noted in a statement. Instagram storywith TikTok effectively signaling its intention to become a right-wing propaganda tool.

If that happens, there will undoubtedly be an exodus of users, not unlike the recent defections Facebook, Instagram, Threads and X. Marketers are running out of social media platforms to reach people.

We regret the mistakes

Apple Intelligence, which uses AI to generate summaries of news headlines, was temporarily unavailable. The Guardian news.

Why? Because it was always inventing something.

Recent examples have included claims that Secretary of Defense nominee Pete Hegseth he was fired (has not); that Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu he was arrested (hadn’t); and alleged UnitedHealthcare bomber Luigi Mangione he shot himself (he didn’t).

Even worse, the iPhone notification UI indicated that these fake headlines came directly from legitimate news sources: The Washington Post, The New York Times, and BBC news, in the above cases.

Last weekApple has promised to develop a software update in response to formal complaints from the BBC, the National Union of Journalists and Reporters Without Borders.

However, in addition to stopping AI insights related to messages, Apple’s update only added a disclaimer that the notification may be incorrect and started using italicized text, which doesn’t address the issue. other problems own to function.

Call us old-fashioned, but wouldn’t it be easier and more accurate to just… let reporters and companies create own mobile notification messages?
